چکیده

This paper introduces an on-going doctoral research track on the role of survivability as an attribute in the design of complex system architectures. Survivability may be defined generally as the ability of a system to minimize the impact of a finite disturbance on value delivery, achieved through either the satisfaction of a minimally acceptable level of value delivery during and after a finite disturbance or the reduction of the likelihood or magnitude of a disturbance. While survivable design of physical system components is a well-understood practice that is best left to established domains, architecting for survivability is a poorly-understood, socio-technical challenge increasingly relevant to engineering systems. After describing the motivation for and the scope of the research, survivability is conceptualized as a meta-framework for robustness and changeability. Survivability includes both passive and active techniques which may manifest themselves in the physical, operational, and organizational design of engineering systems. Where passive survivability relies on the design principles of hardness, stealth, redundancy, and diversity to enable a system to resist a projected disturbance environment, active survivability embraces uncertainty in the projection of future disturbances by stressing architectural agility through the ability to regenerate, evolve, relocate, and retaliate.

A Multi Objective Graph Based Model for Analyzing Survivability of Vulnerable Networks

In the various fields of disaster management, choosing the best location for the Emergency Support & Supply Service Centers (ESSSCs) and the survivability of the network that provides the links between ESSSCs and their environment has a great role to be paid enough attention. This paper introduces a graph based model to measure the survivability of the linking's network. By values computed for ...

Semantic Foundations for Survivable System Analysis and Design

A Survivability Research Agenda Survivability is the capability of an information system to support critical enterprise missions in adverse environments of attacks, failures, and accidents [Ellison et al 1999]. A research program in survivability must therefore address both systems and the environments within which they operate. Survivability is a combination of quality attributes, including se...

A Case Study in Requirements for Survivable Systems

Increasing societal dependency on critical infrastructure systems is driving emergence of a new category of requirements engineering that addresses survivability objectives. This paper presents a case study in survivability requirements analysis. Survivability is the capability of a system to fulfill its mission, in a timely manner, in the presence of attacks, failures, or accidents. The Surviv...

Multi-attribute Tradespace Exploration

Survivability is the ability of a system to minimize the impact of a finite-duration disturbance on value delivery (i.e., stakeholder benefit at cost), achieved through (1) the reduction of the likelihood or magnitude of a disturbance, (2) the satisfaction of a minimally acceptable level of value delivery during and after a disturbance, and/or (3) a timely recovery. Traditionally specified as a...
